FearlessRiOT Top 20 Countdown: Top 100 Songs of 2009

Three of the biggest stars in music in the year 2009 were easily Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, and Beyoncé. All three women have a notable presence on this list, building off of the momentum of their massively successful albums Fearless, The Fame, and I Am… Sasha Fierce. 2009 set the tone for Swift to become the queen of the chart with five songs on the year-end list, all of which are in the Top 40. GaGa also has five while Beyoncé claims three. And meanwhile, a tween-friendly trend slithered it’s way throughout the entire year-end list with two of it’s biggest names – Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, at the peak of a golden era for Disney Channel – landing several songs. In the case of Miley, a soundtrack ballad from the movie adaptation of her famous TV show would prove to have some of the most impressive longevity in the history of the chart. While all of this was going on, Drake was beginning his graduation from Degrassi to pop-rap giant, Paramore continued to be THE band at a time of inner turmoil within their ranks, a Gossip Girl cast member had a # hit, artists like Kelly Clarkson and Eminem and Flyleaf had a thunderous comebacks, Kanye West had several charting features before briefly becoming a pop culture pariah, the WWE made the chart after dropping another theme song compilation album, and even Dave Matthews Band popped in. The countdown was as chaotic as ever, but it made for an interesting year-end list based on weeks spent on the Top 20 Music Countdown and peak position, with the driving force of airplay at this particular time being a combination of personal music collection (on a Zune of all things), music video play at a time when MTV and VH1 still somewhat supported the format, and some radio airplay as well.
